Mathematics often feels like a subject confined to the classroom. For me it's a vivid language that colours every aspect of life. In my latest podcast episode, being on the autism spectrum, I share my unique perspective on how numbers and patterns shape my understanding of the world. From the visual appeal of fractions to the strategic implications of sports scores, I demonstrate that maths is not just a series of abstract concepts but a practical tool that can offer insights into various facets of daily life.

One of the episode's highlights is how I leverage my autism-related strengths to deepen my mathematical prowess. I like to think about visual thinking—a common trait among many autistic individuals—as a powerful tool to enhance my grasp of complex mathematical concepts. Whether it's seeing the physical pieces of a division problem as chocolates to be shared among friends or visualising trigonometry in towering structures, my ability to create mental images makes numbers come alive.

The episode goes beyond personal anecdotes, though, and into the realm of practical application. I talk about the presence of algebra in sports scores, offering a new angle on watching your favourite golf or snooker games. By employing mathematical reasoning, I find spectators can appreciate the intricacies of the sport and make more informed predictions about outcomes. Similarly, I discuss how understanding maths can turn a routine shopping trip into an exercise in savvy spending, as one compares prices and quantifies value with precision.

The conversation then turns to special interests—another hallmark of autism. I share how my fascination with the solar system and Lego has enriched my mathematical abilities. Calculating planetary orbits or understanding multiplication through the arrangement of Lego bricks, I’ve found joy in applying maths to my passions, highlighting the universality of mathematical principles.

This episode is not just a narrative but an invitation to see the world differently. It challenges the listener to consider how mathematics is embedded in our everyday experiences and how embracing this perspective can lead to more effective decision-making and problem-solving. From my experiences, the intersection of autism and mathematics can showcase the diversity of thought and the unique contributions of autistic individuals to our collective understanding of the world.

In essence, my message is one of empowerment and curiosity. I encourage everyone to explore the mathematical landscapes of their own lives, to find the patterns that underpin reality, and to celebrate the logic that guides our understanding. My story is a testament to the beauty and practicality of mathematics, a subject that transcends the boundaries of academia and reaches into the heart of human experience.

The episode concludes with a challenge to the listener—a logic puzzle designed to sharpen the mind and inspire a deeper engagement with mathematical thinking. Whether you're a seasoned puzzle solver or a newcomer, the challenge serves as a reminder of the joy found in unravelling complex problems and the satisfaction of finding solutions

As the episode draws to a close, the aim is for listeners to be left with a renewed appreciation for the mathematical threads that weave through our lives, often unnoticed but always present. Here, we're reminded that the world is a puzzle waiting to be solved, and that mathematics is the key to unlocking its secrets.
