A New World Coming into Focus

Autism is often discussed in terms of difficulty and deficit. However, in my podcast episode, A New World Comes Into Focus, I offer a different lens: one shaped by quiet strengths and gradual clarity.

I describe my experience as “Quiet Currents Under the Surface,” gradually revealing a new world. Over time, subtle differences in how I processed language, engaged socially, and navigated everyday life became more visible to others as well as myself. Rather than framing these differences as flaws, I’ve come to see them as alternate ways of understanding the world. For me it can be like looking at the same landscape from a new perspective.

Supportive environments made an important difference in my journey. At a new primary school, over time, teachers began to recognise my strengths, especially in music. My ability to play the piano led to performances for the school community, shifting how others saw me. Instead of focusing solely on the diagnosis, they began to appreciate me behind it.

Flexibility in teaching can be just as important. Educators allowed me to follow my interests, even when they were different from the standard curriculum. This not only supported me in my learning, but also helped me build meaningful friendships. I was invited to birthday parties, and other outings. All of these experiences helped to make me feel included for who I was.

These reflections, I believe, hold valuable lessons for educators, parents, and peers alike. When we look beyond perceived challenges to recognise strengths, like, in my case, my love for music, mental math, or language learning, we can uncover a more complete picture. There are two questions I ask in this episode:

What is all this telling us?

What can they offer the world?

The episode ends with an open invitation to continue the conversation. Understanding autism means listening, reflecting, and shifting perspective. Sometimes, when we take the time to look more closely, a whole new world begins to come into focus.
